Oh, you guys caught me up.
I was just reading another book.
One of, again, my favorite because, guess what, did you know that it's spring?
I know that came really quick, didn't it?
I wanted to share this book with you guys because it is spring and it's called "When Spring Comes."
Do you know when spring is coming?
Well, if you didn't, this is a great book to help remind you because, as I was reading, spring comes with sun and it comes with rain and more rain and more rain.
Did you know that?
Oh, you did.
Oh, my goodness, you guys are so smart, boys and girls.
So, if you want to read more about what happens during spring, make sure you check this book out: "When Spring Comes" on the Sora app, if you have the Sora app, or at your county library, or, that's right, even at your school library.
Check this book out.
You're going to like it.
Okay, boys and girls, are you guys ready?
Let's see which school came in on our top five countdown for checking out the most book on the Sora app.
Let's see if it's your school.
You ready?
Okay.
Today, we are reviewing, revealing the number four school, and it is Turner, Turner Elementary.
Awesome job, Turner.
You guys are doing awesome job checking out those books and reading.
And you have been in our top countdown for many weeks.
So, two thumbs up for you guys.
You guys are doing an awesome job.
Now, don't forget, boys and girls, I will love to hear what you guys are learning, or what you're reading, or, if you want to tell me all about spring, I will love to hear it.
You just have to write.
So I will love to hear any letter.
So, you can write to me here in our PBS classroom.
Use the address that you see below, or, you guys can email me, and don't forget to put your home address, so that I can mail you, that's right, one of these fun activity books.
We still have a few left here in our PBS classroom, so make sure you guys are writing to me and telling me everything that you're learning 'cause I would sure like to know.
Okay.
Awesome job, boys and girls.
Okay.
Are you guys ready to get started with our lessons?
Awesome.
Now, don't forget, we always start off with, that's right, chaining our ears.
So, let's get those ears, turn them up nice and high, so that you can be listening, because we're going to be playing a game with some phony deletion.
Okay.
This is where I'm going to say some sounds, we're going to blend, we'll say our word, and then I'm going to take a sound away, and then you'll have to tell me what my new word is.
Are you ready?
Okay.
Let's see if you guys can do this.
I'm going to use my red dots to help us, okay?
Now, listen for my sounds.
Ready?
SSS-T-AA-K.
Okay, blend it together.
SSS-T-AK.
What's my word?
STOCK.
Good job.
Now, I'm going to take away the SSS.
What's my new word?
T-AK.
What is it?
TALK.
Good job.
So it was STOCK, take away the SSS, now became TALK.
Good job.
You got it.
Okay.
Let's practice another one.
Ready?
Okay.
Listen for my sounds.
Ready?
FF-L-A.
Three sounds: FF-L-A.
What is it?
FLAW.
Good job.
Take away the FF.
What's my new word?
L-A, LAW.
Good.
How did you do?
Some thumbs up.
Good job.
Okay.
Let's practice one last one.
Ready?
Ready?
Here are my sounds.
K-L-A-UD.
What is it?
K-L-A-UD.
What is it?
CLOUD.
Good job.
Say it, CLOUD.
Now, I'm going to take away the K. What's my new word?
Just L-AUD, LOUD.
More thumbs up.
Awesome job, boys and girls.
You guys are doing such a good job with those listening skills.
Okay.
Now, if you were listening, what vowel sound did you hear me say?
The A sound, you're right.
This week, we are going to be learning the Vowel Team A.
And so that is why I have my straw card here to help me.
Now, say it with me, A.
Good job.
Now it does sound very similar to the short O sound that says AW.
I know.
AW and A, very similar.
So as you're reading or writing, make sure that the A sound is spelled, look at all the different ways that we can spell it, lots of different spelling, so, I want you to spell it and say the sound with me.
Ready?
Because the A sound can have lots of different ways to spell it.
Ready?
A says A.
Good.
A-W says A.
Good.
A-U says A.
Good.
A-U-G-H says A.
That's right, all of those letters make one sound.
So when you see them in a letter, make sure you're only making the A sound.
A-L says A.
And remember, that L does not make a sound because the A and the L together make the A sound.
And here's another spelling that's not as common, but it does make the same sound.
The O-U-G-H says A.
Good job, boys and girls.
Okay.
Now, I have some words here.
Help me blend them together.
Ready?
This says L-A-NN.
What is it?
LAWN.
Good job blending them.
Okay.
Let's practice the second word.
Ready?
PP, and what does A-U say?
A, Good.
P-A-ZZ.
What is it?
PAUSE.
Good.
Like in, please PAUSE the movie, so I can run and get some more popcorn.
PAUSE.
Good blending, boys and girls.
Now, let's practice building some words with the A sound.
Are you ready?
Okay.
What if I wanted to build the word FALL?
Say it with me, FALL.
Ready?
Segment it, if you need to.
F-A-LL F-A-LL.
Ooh, three sounds.
Okay, what was that first sound?
F, good.
Next sound was the A.
Now here's where it get becomes tricky.
Look at all the different ways I can spell that A sound.
Okay.
F-A, and guess what it is?
You're right, the A.
Don't get tricked, boys and girls, it's not the A-L, it's just the A, because we actually hear the A-LL, and it's actually the double L. Remember in that A-L spelling, the L doesn't make a sound.
So we do need the L, and it's actually a double L, so F-ALL, FALL.
Okay.
Now, let's practice another word.
Let's see if you guys can spell WALK now.
WALK.
I know, you guys are thinking, we got this, Mrs. Vang.
I know you do.
Ready?
Segment it with me.
WA-AK, WALK.
Okay, first sound is the WA.
W says WA.
(mumbles) A.
Now here's that tricky part, A.
How do I spell it, The A, the AW, AU, or AL?
WA-K. W-A-K.
Guess what it is?
It's the AL.
Did you know that?
AL says A.
The L doesn't make a sound because W-A-K, we put the K, and this is how we spell WALK.
Did you know that?
I know, that's a tricky one, isn't it?
The A can A, AL can also say A, but in the word FALL, we hear the LL sound.
In the word WALK, we don't have the LL sound.
It's tricky, isn't it?
But I know, you guys are super-smart, and you guys will get it.
Okay.
Now, let's practice reading some more words with the A sound.
Are you guys ready?
Okay.
So, today, I did not put our focus sound in red.
Let's see if you guys can help me read these words.
Ready?
This says CH-A-K, CHALK.
Good.
TH-A-T, THOUGHT.
Good.
Remember, all of those letters make that, you're right, the A sound.
Did you guys see that?
O-U-G-H makes the A, the AL just makes the A.
Next one, K-R-A-L. Good.
What makes the A sound?
AW.
Good job.
Okay.
Let's keep going.
A-TT, B-KAZ, LAN, PA, HANTT, DATAR.
Did you hear that A sound?
Good reading.
DATAR, that was a long word.
Now, let's practice reading it in a sentence.
We ought to walk to the mall.
Did you hear all that A sound?
All those A words, good.
Here's the OUGHT, WALK, MALL.
Good job, boys and girls.
Okay.
Now, let's practice writing.
Get your pencil ready, or your whiteboard.
Here's my sentence: I thought I saw a large paw.
Seven words of my sentence.
I thought I saw a large paw.
Okay.
You guys start writing.
Let's check it together.
Ready?
First word, I.
Good, capital I.
THOUGHT, TH-A, O-U-G-H.
There's a O-U-G-H.
I thought I saw... SS, that's right, it is a high-frequency word.
And it does have that A.
Did you see that?
Good.
I thought I saw a L-AR, we learned that R, JJ, and there's that soft G, LARGE.
What was it?
Oh, PA, P-A.
Let me make (mumbles).
AW says A.
Put your period.
How did you do?
Good reading, boys and girls.
Okay.
Now, let's go into our high-frequency words.
Let me pull my chart, over and around.
Remember all week we are learning 10 words.
Everyday, we're going to focus on two, so help me read and write the two that we're going to be learning today.
Ready?
First word is MOTHER.
Say it again, read it again, MOTHER.
Let's spell it: M-O-T-H-E-R, MOTHER.
Good job.
Next word, O'CLOCK.
Ready?
Spell it.
O, apostrophe, C-L-O-C-K, O'CLOCK.
And O'CLOCK is actually a contraction for "of the clock," so, let's quickly read.
Can you tell me which word goes into this sentence?
School begins at eight... Oh, good job, I hear you.
Eight o'clock.
Okay.
Let's try the next sentence: Paul's hmm has a new job.
Good job.
Paul's mother has a new job.
And I know it's Paul's mother 'cause Paul's is a possessive noun.
Good job, boys and girls.
Now, we don't have time to practice our Vowel Team Syllables, so we'll practice them tomorrow, but this is something that we're going to continue learning.
We're just gonna touch upon it this week, but we'll get back to it in the following weeks, but all you need to know is that we are dividing words into syllables.
We keep our vowel teams together in the same syllable.
Okay?
So, remember, all of our vowel teams, like this week, are awesome.
That's a vowel team.
We want to keep them together.
So, BECAUSE, you see my A, make sure you keep that together when you divide BE-CAUSE.
Did you see that?
Awesome.
So we'll continue learning that all this week, boys and girls, so don't forget to come back tomorrow so that we can continue working and making our brain super-strong.
You're right, the stronger our brain is, the smarter we are.
So, boys and girls, have a great day learning.
I'll see you back in our classroom tomorrow.
