♪ Good morning to ♪ ♪ A brand new day ♪ ♪ Time to learn ♪ ♪ And games to play ♪ ♪ Learning things is so much fun ♪ ♪ Learning is good for everyone ♪ (guitar plays) (bright cheerful music plays) - Hey, good morning, boys and girls, happy Friday.
We made it.
Welcome to our "Second Grade PBS classroom".
My name is Mrs. Vang.
I'm so excited to have you join me, so that we can become amazing readers and writers.
Now I was just reading this story.
This is such a cute story.
This is called "Watch out for wolf".
It's written by Anica Mrose Rissi illustrated by Charles Is it Santoso?
Boys and girls.
This is such a sweet book.
Now this is a sweet twist on stories with wolves and pigs.
Cause normally in the stories that we read with the three wolfs, the three pigs.
It's always a Wolf that's trying to blow down their houses right?
Well in this story.
Guess what?
They keep telling each other to watch for the wolf because guess what?
that they have a sweet surprise for the wolf.
I know, I bet you'll never guess it.
But, you'll have to read to find out what it is.
I'll tell you.
It's what you wouldn't expect cause I didn't expect it when I read it.
If you want to read this book make sure you are checking the Sora app to see if you can check this book out to read.
Or at your County library or remember all of these books were recommended by Mrs. Martinez.
She's the librarian at Thomas elementary.
I want to thank her for recommending these books for me.
So I can share them with you guys.
Don't forget you can also check out books at your library.
Okay?
Boys and girls.
Speaking of Sora now let's see which school came into our top spot this week.
Ready?
Okay.
Let's see fingers crossed.
Is it your thing?
Is it your school?
Let's see.
Who is it?
Ewing elementary.
Good job Ewing.
Awesome job.
I think you've been in our top countdown for two or three times in a row now.
You guys are doing an awesome job.
Checking out those books and reading.
I'm so proud of you.
Good job.
But don't forget if you want to see your school, on our top countdown.
Remember to be checking out those books and reading them on Sora cause remember the more you read that's right?
The stronger we make our brain, the smarter we get.
Okay.
Boys and girls, are you ready?
Let's get into our lesson for today.
Now we're going to start off with?
That's right.
Training our ears.
So, turn your listening ears up so that we can play our, blending game.
This is where I'm just going to say some sounds.
Your job is to blend them and guess my word.
You guys are really good at this.
Are you guys ready?
Okay.
Get your arms ready if you need to.
Are you ready?
Oh, some of you guys are telling me you're right.
I totally forgot.
It's a Friday.
Oh, I got Friday brains.
Now boys and girls.
Don't forget.
I would love to hear from you guys.
So make sure you guys are writing me a letter.
Make sure you're telling me what you're learning.
What books you have, read what books you want me to recommend to other boys and girls or if you just want to write a story for me to read, I would love that.
If you send it, don't forget use the address that you see on the screen.
You can send it to me so that I can get it here in our "PBS classroom" or you can email it to me.
I will get it.
Don't forget to put your home address or what we call you a return address so that I can send you.
That's right.
One of these fun activity, books, boys and girls.
When I get your letters I will send you one of these books.
I can't wait to receive your letter so that I can read them.
All right.
Okay.
Oh, you guys are so good at reminding me.
I've got that Friday brain.
Okay.
Now let's go back into our that's right.
That's practice our listening ears.
Okay.
So again, I'm going to say some sounds.
You can blend them and guess my word.
Remember if blending in the arm is a great strategy for you, use it.
If you'd like to pound and blend, use that strategy.
Okay.
Use the strategy.
That's going to help you.
I'm going to use my arms and blend.
Okay.
So here, listen to my sounds.
What's my word.
L-O-O-K L-O-O-K what's my word?
Look.
Good job.
Okay.
Next set of sounds ready.
F-L-U-T-E F Oh, let me do that again.
Okay ready.
F-L-U-T-E What is it?
Flute.
Good job.
That was a tricky one.
Okay.
Last set of sounds.
Ready.
P-U-L-L What is it?
Pull.
You got it.
Good job, boys and girls.
Okay.
Now let's go into our phonics instruction this week.
Now remember all week we have been learning the vowel teams.
OU and I mean OU and -_U You see how I did that?
I mixed them up because they're so similar.
We're working on the spoon card and the book card.
Remember the spoon card says, ou.
Okay.
If you need help, remember to take that spoon and um take your soup, your super spoon put up to your mouth and do the oo.
And you lip should go up.
That's how you know, it's the ou, sound but look at all the different ways that we can spell it.
I know we can spell the oo with the, O-O.
The u consonant e. The u by itself, the -_ew the u-_e the ou and the -_ui-_.
They all say, what's that sound?
Oo, good job.
They all make the oo sound.
Now we're also learning the vowel teams of the double o and book.
So I have my book card and the two o's, O-O.
Says oo.
Say that with me.
OO, good job.
You're right.
Just like if you got hit in the stomach you'll oo, right.
It's deep down in the belly.
Oo.
Now.
There are some words, very few that has the ou and the u that both also make the oo sound just very few.
If you are reading, cause they mostly say, ou.
It doesn't sound right.
Change it to the ui, okay.
Good job, boys and girls.
You're right.
That, ou I know.
I also taught this is ou.
I know lots of different sounds for different spellings.
I know.
Good job remembering.
Okay.
Now I have some letters here for us help me blend them together.
Ready?
This says boo What sound is it ook?
book Nope, Book.
Yes.
Book.
It has that oo.
It says book had the oo, like my book card.
Book.
Good job.
Now.
What if I wanted to spell the word cook.
Cook.
How do I change that to cook?
Good job.
Just change the boo to a coo, C-O-O-K what is it?
Cook.
Good job.
Now.
What if I wanted to change to look.
Good?
Just change the, coo to the loo.
Now I have look.
Good job, boys and girls.
Remember the spelling pattern.
Once you know how to spell one word most of the time you can spell more than one word.
Now.
Here's my next word.
Ready?
Help me blend it.
F-U.
Oh, does the ue sound full.
Good job Full.
Now?
What if I wanted to spell pool?
Good.
Just change the fu to a pu Good job.
Okay.
Now today's Friday.
I have a fun story to read with you guys.
Okay.
But, before we read our story.
Let's quickly work on our fluency.
We're going to work on our accuracy reading every word correctly.
Our rate checking to make sure we're not going too fast or too slow.
Working on our expression, reading with feelings.
Of course paying attention to our punctuation.
We know when to stop, pause or change our intonation at the end if its in question mark.
Okay.
Today I have a fun folk tale for you guys called "Soon the North Wind Blew".
As your reading.
I want you to read, to find out who's stronger.
The sun or the North wind.
I don't know.
Don't forget.
There's going to be lots of words with our focus pattern our focus spelling pattern the ou and the eu sound.
See if you can find them.
Boys and girls let's read together.
"Soon the North wind blew".
One day the North Wind and the Sun talked about which was stronger.
"Don't be rude," said the Wind.
"Did you forget about the time I blew off that roof during a storm?"
He asked.
"I can destroy with my might.
It is true.
I have always been stronger than you."
"But did you ever hear about the time I dried up all the water to a make desert?"
said the Sun.
"That is a clue to how strong I am.
I couldn't have done that unless I was very strong.
You shouldn't forget that."
This went on morning, noon, and night.
The moon grew sick of their cruel bickering.
"It is my duty to stop this.
I have a plan," said the Moon.
The Moon was wise, so the Wind and the Sun said that they will let her draw up a plan.
"Here are the rules.
The stronger will get the man walking along in his suit to take off his coat using nothing but your own might.
That will be the proof we truly need."
said the Moon.
The North Wind went first.
He blew a strong noisy wind.
It was so strong that fruit blew off the fruit trees, which made him full of joy.
But that just meant that the man grasped his coat tighter and wouldn't take it off.
The man felt too cool to get rid of his warm coat.
Next, the Sun shone down on the man.
Soon the man was oozing with heat and sat down to rest.
He took a rock out of his shoe and then walked on.
The man was sweating from head to toe as the strong sun beat down on him.
Soon he was so hot that he threw off his coat.
"Well," said the Moon.
"I watched the whole thing.
I conclude that we have a winner.
The Sun is stronger than the North Wind."
The North Wind was in a bad mood.
Only one thing would make him feel better.
He needed to blow off some steam.
The wind took in a few deep gulps of air and blew with all his might.
He blew until the man's coat blew right out of sight!
Now the men can not put his coat back on even if you wanted to.
And that is the end of the story about the Sun and the North Wind.
(guitar plays) Who was stronger?
Right.
The Sun.
He was able to make the man keep his coat on but wasn't really fair.
I don't know.
Make sure you guys are retelling the story to your sibling or your family today or tonight.
Boys and girls.
Did you find any words of that?
Where their focus spelling pattern, the oo or the ou?
I know.
Look at how many words I found.
They were all over my folk tale today.
Now I'm not going to read them all Cause there was a lot of them.
I'm just going to read some of the words I thought you might've missed, like oozing.
Did you get that?
Good?
True.
Good, would.
Lots of words.
Right?
Good job boys and girls.
Okay.
Now let's quickly go over our high-frequency words.
Cause if you notice in our story all of our high-frequency words was present.
