♪ Good morning to a brand new day ♪ ♪ Time to learn and games to play ♪ ♪ Learning things is so much fun ♪ ♪ Learning is good for everyone ♪ (upbeat music) - Good morning Second Grade.
Happy Monday.
How was your weekend?
Awesome, I know it's so nice outside right now.
It's nice to get out and get some nice fresh air.
How are you doing boys and girls?
Awesome, are you guys ready?
Boys and girls, my name is Mrs. Vang, and I'm so excited to have you join me, so that we can become amazing readers and writers.
So this week I was trying to find books to recommend for you guys.
And you know what?
I went and asked my daughter who's in third grade right now what her favorite books were when she was in second grade and she gave me some great recommendation.
So I'm gonna start off, with some of her favorite books to read with her Amelia Bedelia books.
Have you read these books, boys and girls?
Oh, I love Amelia Bedelia.
She is so silly.
Did you know that she's a housekeeper who takes everything very literally?
I know it's so fun to read these.
So if you wanna read these Amelia Bedelia books you can see if you can find them on the Sora app or check them out at your County library.
Okay, now, speaking of checking out books on the Sora app, let's see which school came in and our top five countdown.
So coming in at number five today on this week is, let's see, Mayfair, good job!
Boys and girls, you guys at Mayfair, you guys are doing an awesome job reading those books.
Keep it up!
You guys have not been in our countdown but I'm so glad to see you guys there.
Okay, boys and girls.
Now I know that your brain has been racing all weekend.
So we're going to start off with, that's right, training our brain.
I mean training our ears, right?
But, let's review some sounds.
So wake up that brain so that our brain is ready to learn.
But before we get started, I almost forgot.
I would love to hear from you guys.
So boys and girls, remember you can write to me here at the CDO.
Tell me what you're learning.
Tell me what books you're reading or tell me some of your favorite books to read.
And boys and girls, once I get your letters I will send you one of these fun activity books.
So you see the address below?
That's right, that's where you write to me here, in our PBS classroom.
But make sure to put your home address, so I know, where to send these activity books, okay?
Awesome.
Okay, boys and girls.
Now, are you ready?
Awesome, let's get started with waking up our brain.
Okay, so we're gonna play a game called Mystery Word.
And remember this is a review game.
So these have sounds that we've already learned already.
To play this game, I'm gonna show you some sound spelling cards, your job is to blend them together and guess my word.
And I want you to write them.
And we're gonna check to see if you have written the word correctly.
Are you ready?
Okay, let's get started.
So warm up that brain.
Okay, first sound is, the camel card, the camel card says C, good job.
The next sound is ooh, the cow card.
Remember that was the sound we learned last week?
What sound does it say?
Ou, good job.
Okay, blend it together.
C, ou last sound is the cheese card, and the cheese card says, ch good job.
Okay, blend it together.
What's my missing word?
Ch, oh, sorry, let's try that again.
That wasn't the right sound.
The camel card says, C, ou, ch.
Ooh, what's my word?
Couch.
How did you do?
Thumps up, I see it, good job.
Let's check to see if you spelled it correctly, ready?
Couch is spelt, C-O-U-C-H. How did you do?
Awesome job boys and girls.
Good work.
Now let's go and practice our high-frequency words.
Remember high-frequency words.
Oh, that shows up most frequently when we're reading.
All week, we're gonna have 10 words that we're gonna be practicing.
Every day, we're gonna focus on two.
So today I want you to help me read and write, okay?
So our first word for today, is the word several.
Good, help me read it again.
Several, good job.
Help me spell it.
S-E-V-E-R-A-L, several, good job.
Next word is laugh.
Good, help me read it.
Laugh, good.
Help me spell it.
L-A-U-G-H, laugh, good job.
Now I have two sentences for us.
Let's read them and see which one of these words will go into my sentence so that it'll makes sense, ready?
Read the first sentence with me.
I hmm at funny jokes.
Whoa, did you guys see the context clues there?
You're right, something about funny jokes.
I see you thinking, good.
Let's do the next sentence.
We ate hmm snacks after lunch.
Oh, I see all those thinking brains, good job.
So let's go back.
I, good I hear you.
I laugh at funny jokes.
Isn't that what we do when we hear a funny joke?
You're right, we laugh.
Good thinking.
So that must mean several goes in the second sentence.
Let's read it.
We ate several snacks after lunch.
Does that make sense?
Yes, good reading boys and girls.
Now let's practice reading all of our high-frequency words that we're gonna be learning this week.
We're gonna start the two that we learned today, ready?
Laugh, several, please, busy, brought, love, else, happy, I'll and maybe.
And remember if some of these words are hard for you to read, make sure you're writing them down and that you're practicing them, okay.
Now boys and girls, are you now ready?
Let's go into our focus phonics, Focus phonics like lesson of the week.
Okay, so we're gonna start off by, that right, training our ears.
'Cause remember we need to hear the sound so that we can read the sound and then write the sound, okay?
So listen, we're just gonna do some blending today, okay?
This is where I'm gonna say some sounds, your job blend them together and guess my word, ready?
Okay, here's the first set of sounds.
T, oy blend it together.
T, oy what's my word?
Toy, good job.
Toy, good job.
Okay, second setup sounds, ready?
C, o in, c, o, in, good job.
What is it?
Coin, good job.
Coin.
Okay, last set of sounds.
S oi l, s, oi, l what's my word?
Soil, good job boys and girls, Soil, thumbs up, good job.
Now, if you were listening, what was that sound that you heard, or I should say vowel sound.
Did you hear it?
Good, it's our focus out of the week.
It's the oi sound.
So let me turn this around so that we can practice our sound of a week.
So we're continuing learning our deep sounds.
Remember last week we learned that ou sound, this week we're gonna focus on the oi sound.
And so I have my boy card.
And if you look at my card, the oi sound can be spelled two different ways, okay?
So I wanna us to spell them and say it, okay?
So we're gonna spell them, say three times, and boys and girls the more you spell and say them the more your brain will recognize it and say it, ready?
So say it with me.
O-I says, oi, O-I says oi, O-I says oi, good job.
And the oi boys and girls is usually happens when a word or in a word in the beginning or the middle.
That's your clue, okay?
When you're writing, if you hear the oi in the beginning or middle, then it's spelled with the oi.
Now the next way is the O-Y, three times ready?
O-Y says oy, O-Y says oy, O-Y says oy and do you see that line in front of it?
That means the O-Y, is usually happens at the end of a word.
So if you're spelling it and you hear that oy at the end of the word, then it's gonna be an O-Y, not the O-I, okay?
So most of the time.
So now let's look at the words that I have on my chart.
Let's blend it together, ready?
So we know that O-I says oi, so let's blend it together.
J, oi, n, What's my word?
Join, good job.
Like you can join us tonight for a game.
Join, good.
Now what if I wanna spell the word coin?
Coin, good, it's very similar to join, 'cause it has the oin.
So to change it to coin, I just change it to the, C and it becomes coin, right?
Good, let's look at the next word.
Remember, we know O-Y says oy, you're right.
So sound it out.
B, oy what's my word?
Boy, and you notice O-Y is that the end of my word, boy.
Now what if I wanted to spell the word toy?
How do I spell it?
T, oy.
You're right.
I'm gonna use the O-Y, 'cause it's at the end and I'm just gonna change the B to a T. what's my new word?
Toy, good job boys and girls.
Now I have some words and I want us to practice reading words with the oi sound, okay, are you ready?
Okay, so the first row all has that oy at the end, ready?
Help me read, toy joy, boy, coy, good job.
How did you do?
Good, you're right.
And guess what?
They are rhyming words, boys and girls.
Good thinking.
Okay, let's read the next line and you're right.
They all have that oi in the middle, in the middle, in the middle.
And then at that beginning, remember?
O-I is usually appears in the middle of a word or in the beginning of a word, ready?
Let's read it.
Choice, broil, spoil and oil.
How did you do?
Awesome.
Now the next row just review words.
Let's see if you can remember what we've learned previously, ready?
This says town, good.
Sound, proud, owl.
Good reading.
Okay, now I have a sentence.
Let's practice reading words now in a sentence with our focus sound, ready?
That toy makes a lot of noise.
Did you see the exclamation point?
Good job.
What words did you see?
Good, there was a word toy, with a oy, and noise with the oi.
Okay, now I'm gonna give you a sentence and I want you to help write it, ready?
Okay, it's a long one today.
So get ready.
Will the boy with the nice voice sing?
That's eight words, ready?
Will the boy with the nice voice sing.
Okay, let's start.
Check your writing with me.
Let's see if you can spell that sentence.
Will, don't forget to capitalize your W, will the, that's my next word, good, boy has that oy, make sure you spell with the oy?
Will the boy with, that was a high frequency word, we learned a long time ago.
Will, the boy with the nice, that's a word we can sound out, voice.
Let's build it.
V, oi, and it's in the middle, so it's the, oice, voice and this is a tricky one, the C-E says, ce, voice, Will the boy with the nice voice sing, good job.
How did you do?
Good, don't forget there's that question mark.
It's just asking a question?
Good job, boys and girls.
How did you do?
I know, you guys are doing such a good job boys and girls.
So don't forget to come back again tomorrow, so that we can continue our learning.
I'm gonna leave you with, guess what?
"It's not okay to not know but it's okay to not try".
So keep trying, you guys are awesome, bye bye.
