I didn't see you there.
I was so busy reading this new book that I found.
Boys and girls, I'm so glad that you're here to join us.
My name is Mrs. Vang, and I'm so excited to have you here so that we can become amazing readers and writers.
Okay.
This is such a great book, and I wanted to share this book with you guys.
Because boys and girls, as we are coming to an end of the month, we will continue to celebrate Black History Month all this week, and all year long, not just in the month of February.
This book is called "28 Days: Moments in Black History That Changed the World."
Now, this is a great reminder of the extraordinary events that changed the course of black history, and all of our history.
So boys and girls, if you wanna read this amazing book, you can try to see if you can find it at your county library, 'cause that's where I found this book, at my county library.
Or, try to see if you can find it on Sora if you have the Sora app.
Now, are you guys ready to see which school came in on our top five countdown for Sora?
Well let's see.
Coming in in number five is, Wilson.
Good job Wilson Wildcats.
You guys are doing an amazing job checking out those books on Sora and reading.
Remember boys and girls, the more you read, the stronger your brain becomes.
Awesome job boys and girls.
And boys and girls, don't forget, you can always write to me here at the studio if you have a book that you want to share with everybody.
You see the address below?
Use that address.
Write me a letter, and tell me what you are reading or what you're learning.
And I will send you one of these amazing activity books.
These are so fun boys and girls.
I can't wait to send you guys one.
So write me a letter, and put your return address or your home address so I can send one of these fun books to you.
Okay boys and girls.
Are you guys ready to get started?
Okay.
So let's stretch out that brain of ours so that it can become strong.
Because remember, the stronger our brain gets, the smarter we get.
So we're going to start off with mystery word.
You're right, it's Monday.
Our brain has been resting all weekend, so let's warm it up by playing our mystery game.
Now remember, our mystery word game has review sounds for us.
These are all sounds that we've learned together.
I'm going to show you some sound spelling cards.
Your job is to blend them together.
And guess my word.
Now don't forget boys and girls to write my word, and then we'll check to see how you did.
Are you ready?
All right.
Let's get started.
My first sound is the camel card.
And the camel card says C. Next sound is the lemon card.
What does the lemon card say?
Oh I hear you, good.
L. My last sound is.
Oh, did you guys remember this sound?
This is a sound we learned last week.
This is my ear sound.
Okay.
Let's blend it together.
C, L, ear.
Say it faster.
C, L, ear.
What's my word?
Clear.
Clear.
Good job boys and girls.
Now let's check to see if you spelled it correctly.
Clear.
Okay.
Clear spells C-L-E-A-R, clear.
How did you do?
Thumbs up if you got it.
Awesome job boys and girls.
Good job waking up that brain.
Okay.
Now, let's go right into our high-frequency words.
Remember, high-frequency words are words that we need to know automatically.
That means without signing up because it shows up most frequently when we are reading or writing.
All week, we have 10 words.
Every day, we're going to focus on two.
So our two words that we're going to learn today are the word once and talk.
Help me read it again.
Once.
Good job.
Help me spell it.
O-N-C-E, once.
Good job.
My next word is talk.
Help me read it again.
Talk.
Good job.
Help me spell it.
T-A-L-K, talk.
Good job boys and girls.
Now I have two sentences for us.
Help me read the two sentences, and help me figure out which one of these word will go into the sentence so that will make sense.
Ready?
Let's do the first sentence together.
We mm to grandma on the phone every day.
Hmm, are you thinking?
Oh I see you guys thinking, good.
Okay, let's do the second sentence.
Mm we got to the beach, we had fun.
Okay.
Now, here's some context clues that should help you.
If you're on the phone, what are you doing?
You're right.
We talk on the phone, so let's put talk here.
Let's read it.
We talked to grandma on the phone every day.
Does that make sense?
Yes.
So that must mean once goes in the second sentence.
Once we got to the beach, we had fun.
How does that look?
Oh, you're right.
Once starts the sentence so we need a capital E. Let's change that.
Once we got to the beach, we had fun.
How about that?
Awesome job boys and girls, you guys are doing such a good job.
Okay.
So, now before we get started with our phonics lesson, let's, you're right.
We need to train that ear.
So turn your ears all the way up so that we can practice hearing sounds.
Today, we're going to be identifying syllables.
Ready?
I'm going to say a word.
You just have to tell me how many syllable are in my word.
Okay.
Ready?
First word.
Stairs.
Stairs.
Remember different ways that you can do to find syllables.
You can clap syllables.
You can tap syllables.
Or, if you like to stand up and move around, like my son, he uses his whole body and taps his body.
Okay, stairs.
How many syllables?
Stairs.
Oh, how many?
Just one.
Good job for those of you that said one.
Okay, let's continue.
My second word is airport.
Say airport.
How many syllables?
Airport.
Good job.
Two syllables.
How did you do?
You got it, good job.
Okay, last word.
Ready?
Repairing.
That's a harder one.
Say it again.
Repairing.
Oh I hear you, good job.
Okay, let's check it.
Repairing.
Three syllables.
Good job boys and girls.
And did you know, hearing syllabus will help you read and write?
I'm going to be learning that today.
Okay, so now that we have trained our ears, let's focus on our spelling pattern for the week.
So I'm going to turn my chart around.
Okay.
So, we are getting deeper and deeper into second grade and you guys have learned a lot of spelling pattern.
Now, this week, we are going to be focusing on the chair card.
Can you say that with me?
Chair card.
Now, the chair card says air.
Say that sound with me, air.
Good, one more time.
Air.
So the sound that we are learning this week is the air sound.
And, if you look at my sound spelling card, there are four ways that I can spell that air sound.
A-I-R, says air, like in the word chair.
Good.
A-R-E says are, like in the word care.
Good.
E-A-R says ear, like in the word wear.
And E-R-E says ere, like in the word there.
Now, do you see something?
You're right, last week I said that E-A-R and E-R-E both can also say ear.
So this is where it gets tricky boys and girls, because E-A-R and E-R-E do have two different.
We can say it two different ways.
This week, we're going to learn that it says air.
Last week we learned that it said ear.
So boys and girls, as you're reading, and it doesn't make sense, change it to the other sound.
So this week, we're going to focus on the air sound.
Good job boys and girls.
The air sound.
I know that's a tricky one, but we'll work on it together.
Okay boys and girls.
So now, let's practice reading some words with that air sound, okay?
And I did write them on here so that you guys can help me blend it together, okay?
So, we'll take it slow.
Here's the first word.
And here's my spelling pattern, you're right.
Because A-I-R says air.
You're right.
And air is like the air around us.
It's also a word.
Okay, next word.
E-R-E says ere.
Put the T-H, put it together and it says there, good job.
There.
Next word.
Good.
Bear.
Bear.
Good job, and that's like the animal, right?
The bear.
Next word.
Where.
Good job.
Some of these are our high-frequency words.
Next word.
Fair.
Good.
Next word.
Care.
Next word.
Pair.
Now, the tricky thing about these words are there are four different ways to spell that air sound, so we're going to come across a lot of homophones this week.
Remember homophones are those words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meaning, okay?
So as we come across them, I'll point them out for you guys like pair.
There's another way to spell pair, but this is the pair like you have two of.
Now, let's practice reading some of our review words that we've learned already.
Ready?
Thorn.
Knee.
Park.
And near.
Good job reading.
Okay, let's practice our sentence, ready?
Do you dare stare at a bear?
Do you?
Oh, you guys are brave.
Okay, now, I saw some air sound.
Here's my in dare, good.
My air in stare.
And good job, and bear.
Good reading.
Okay, now I have a sentence for you.
Let's see if you can write my sentence down.
We're going to practice our sentence dictation, ready?
Where is my pair of hair clips?
Seven words.
I know you guys can do it, ready?
Where are my pair of hair clips?
Okay, let's start.
Check your sentence with mine.
First word.
Where.
And that has our spelling pattern.
Here's the E-R-E. Where is my.
And here's that word pair, two of something.
A-I-R. Where is my pair of hair.
H-A-I-R, here's my air.
Clips.
I can spell that.
And it's a, good job, question.
Let's put a question mark.
Okay, let's read it again and check.
Where is my hair.
Uh oh.
Where is my pair of hair clips?
There you go.
How did you do?
Awesome job boys and girls.
Okay, don't forget to come back tomorrow so that we can continue learning that air sound.
That's a really tricky sound boys and girls.
You guys are doing such a good job.
And guess what, I'm going to leave you with my message of the day.
I'm going to say positive vibes only.
So boys and girls, when someone is saying things that are negative, you tell them positive vibe only.
Like you guys are doing an amazing job, and I am so proud of you.
See you tomorrow, bye-bye.
