My name is Mrs. Vang and I'm so excited to have you join me so that we can become amazing readers and writers.
Did you notice that it is already a new month?
It's the month of February.
So we're gonna kick off by reading and I'm gonna recommend on some of my favorite books about kindness, 'cause February is a month that we can celebrate being kind to each other.
So, today I have one of my favorite books to share with you guys, this is a book called "What Does It Mean To Be Kind?"
And I love this book because it's about a little girl, who has the courage to be kind to a new student in class and her kindness spreads, and then pretty soon the whole community is experiencing the magical shift of being kind.
Can you believe that?
So, boys and girls, I love this book, and if you wanna read it, you can try to see if you can find this book on Sora or at your County library.
Now, speaking of Sora, let's see which school made our top five countdown.
So today's Monday, so we're gonna start at the school that came in at number five.
So let's see, coming in number five is, Birney, awesome job Birney, you guys are doing a great job, checking out those books and reading.
Now, are you guys ready to get started?
Awesome, remember we need to make our brain super strong, and when our brain becomes strong, our brain becomes smart.
You're right.
So, because today's Monday, we're gonna warm up that brain by playing a game called Mystery Word.
Now, don't forget, oh, and I forgot about this boys and girls, if you want to recommend a book for me to share or if you wanna tell me what you're learning, make sure you write to me here at the studio and I'll send you one of these fun activity books.
So, use the address that you see below, and make sure you're writing to me, and you can tell me all about what you're learning, or if you want me to recommend a book for other boys and girls, or if you wanna recommend a word for me to use for our Mystery Word, all right?
Good job boys and girls.
Okay, now let's get started to warm up that brain, okay?
So, you remember Mystery Word, I'm gonna show you some sound spelling cards.
Your job is to blend the sounds together to guess our mystery word.
And if you have a pencil or a whiteboard nearby, make sure you get it, so you can write my mystery word, and we're gonna see if you spelled it correctly.
Okay, are you ready?
Awesome, let's get started.
So, my first sound is the nest card, and then nest card says, kn, good job.
My next sound is the octopus card, and the octopus card is my short o, and that says, o, kn, o, My last sound is the camel card, and the camel card says, ck.
Okay, blend it together now, kn, o, ck, what's my mystery word?
Knock, good job, knock.
Let's check to see how you spell knock.
Knock is spelled, let me get this in.
K N O C K, knock.
Notice that kn, was spelled with a K N, that's where we got that kn.
The o, was just O, and the ck, because it was a short vowel, boys and girls, remember that little rule, if it's a short vowel make sure you put the C K, knock, how did you do?
Awesome job, I see thumbs up, good job, boys and girls.
Okay, now, let's go and practice our high frequency words.
Remember high frequency words are words that show up most frequently when we are reading and or writing.
So it's important to know how to read and write them, so that we don't have to use all their brain powers to read and write when we see them.
And we're gonna save those for those longer words.
So all week we have 10 words, every day we're gonna focus on two.
So we have two words that we're gonna focus on today.
Our two words are the word, animal and away.
Help me read it again, ready?
Animal, good job.
Help me spell animal, A N I M A L, animal.
And that's a word that I know a lot of my second graders love to write.
Animal, make sure you can read and write it.
Now, the next word is away, help me read it, away, good job.
Help me spell it, A W A Y, away.
Good job, boys and girls.
Now, I have two sentences for us.
Help me read the two sentence, and try to figure out which one of these words will go into my sentences, so that they'll makes sense.
Ready?
Help me with the first sentence.
A bird is an, that can fly.
Oh, use those context clues, which word would go in there that will make sense.
And the next sentence says, we saw the little bird fly.
Oh, two sentences about birds, isn't that amazing?
Let's see a bird is an, what?
An animal, good job, I hear you.
A bird is an animal that can fly, you're right.
So then thus mean away goes in the second sentence.
Let's read it, we say the little bird fly away.
How did you do?
Awesome job, boys and girls.
Now, let's practice reading our high-frequency words, so that we can be ready for them when we learn them all week.
I'm gonna grab my reading fingers, help me read.
We're gonna start with the two that we learned today.
Ready, animal, away.
Building, found, from, Saturday, thought, today, toward, and watch.
Good job, boys and girls.
Now, we're gonna go into our listening skills, you're right, good job.
So turn those listening ears up, and let's get practice to play a game called stretch it out.
So, in this game, I'm gonna say a word.
Your job is to segment the words into phonemes.
Meaning we're gonna segment it so that you can just hear the individual sounds.
Are you ready?
Okay, what if I said the word dirt, say dirt.
Okay, segment it, what do you here?
D irt, dirt, good job.
How many sounds was that?
Three sounds, good job.
Okay, how about the word far, say it far, and if you want it you can also segment it this way.
Help me segment it by stretching it out, ready, f ar, far.
How many sounds was that?
Two, good job.
Now, last word, ready?
What if I wanted the word turn, turn.
Okay, you can also pull it from your mouth to segment.
So here's another way ready, t urn, turn.
How many sounds wass that?
Three, good job.
How did you do?
Good job listening.
Hey, now, if you notice there was something about all of those vowel sounds.
It's gonna take us into our phonics instruction for the week.
So let me get my chart turned around, so that we can practice and learn our sound of the week.
So, this week, boys and girls, we're gonna be learning what we call the R controlled vowel.
And we're gonna learn the shirt card.
Now the shirt card says, R, say that with me, the shirt card says, R. So this week, our sound that we're gonna learn is the R sound.
And, if you look at my shirt card, there are four different ways that we can spell that R sound.
So, E R, can say er, say it with me, E R, can say er, like in the word fern, you see that?
Fern, good job.
Now, I R, can say ir, help me say it, I R, can say ir, like in the word, shirt, you see that?
Sh ir t, shirt, okay?
Now, the third way we can spell, R is with the U R, help me say it, U R, says ur.
Good, one more time, U R, says ur, like in the word t ur n. Listen, t ur n, turn, did you here that?
Awesome.
Now the last way is with the O R, so O R, says or, help me say it, O R says or, like in the word work.
Now, O R is not as common as the E R the I R, and then U R, because O R does make another sound.
So, do note that O R is not as common, that just means there's only a few words, that has the O R spelling but say the or, we're gonna learn that the O R, has another sound, because it's part of what we call the R control vowel also.
So this week, boys and girls, we're gonna really focus on R, sound, but spell with the E R, I R, and U R. So again, the tricky part about learning these R control er is it's sound it only has one sound, it's sound are the same, right?
Er, ir, ur, and or, but they're three different spelling, so we have to be careful about that.
Okay, the way to know how to spell them boys and girls, is pretty much by reading, the more you read, the more your brain becomes familiar with how these words are spelled.
So, all week, we're gonna be focusing on the R sound.
Let's go and practice reading some words with the R sound.
Okay, let me get my reading fingers and help me read the words on my chart.
Are you ready?
And if you notice, I put all of our R control vowels in the red.
So help me read these words, ready?
Dirt, herd, curl, first, work, turn, birds, and verb.
How did you do?
Awesome.
Now, this next row are words or we can review words 'cause we learned the spelling pattern and the sound last week.
Remember these are all of our silent letters, ready?
Let's help me read it.
Know, wrap, comb, and scent, good job.
Now let's practice reading a sentence with our R sound, ready?
Curt saw a bird called a tern.
And on Friday, we're gonna read a book all about eight tern.
Now, I have a quick sentence for us to write.
So let's see if you can write this, we're going to go fast, ready?
The nurse went to work.
How many words?
Five, the nurse went to work, five words.
Now, help me spell this sentence, ready?
Say it again, the, nurse, went, to, work.
Let me grab my pen or my marker so that we can write together, ready?
First word, the nurse, says nur and the ur is the U R, nurse and this is the tricky one 'cause it has this silent letter.
The nurse went, site whether we learned already, to, to the nurse went to work, and there's my R with O R, work.
The nurse went to work.
How did you do?
Awesome job, boys and girls.
You guys are doing amazing.
Don't forget to come back tomorrow so that we can continue.
And I'm gonna leave you off with our message of the day because remember we're gonna be talking all about kindness.
So, my message is kindness begins with me.
Have a great day, I'll see you tomorrow, bye-bye.
