Welcome back to Camp Read-A-Lot, the place where we read books, sing songs, and keep the learning going all summer long.
My name is Mrs. Lara, can you tell me your name?
I'm so excited that you made it back today.
Today is Friday, and we have lots of fun things planned, so let's start our day with a song.
I have my friend, Maria the mail person here, she stays busy delivering our packages, doesn't she?
Let's sing our song together, ready?
♪ Good morning, good morning.
♪ ♪ It's a sunshine kind of day.
♪ ♪ Come join Mrs. Lara for some learning and some play.
♪ ♪ Will we sing our song?
♪ ♪ Of course we will, make our brain strong ♪ ♪ Like super strong ♪ ♪ So come along ♪ ♪ Yes come on friends ♪ ♪ For some learning and some play ♪ So hello, jello, What's up butter cup We have lots to do today.
I'm glad that you woke up.
So let's go through our visual schedule and check our plan for the day.
So we're gonna start our day off with some really fun activities.
We're actually gonna do a rumpus stick activity with verbs.
Now you may be asking yourself, what is a verb?
It's an action word.
And I have my rumpus stick here.
We're going to do that activity together.
And then we're going to read a fun book that involves spaghetti and hot dog buns.
And we might even have some special guests that are going to come help taste, test our concoction.
Then we're going to do some writing together.
We haven't done writing together here before.
So I'm so excited to try that out with you.
And of course, if we have time, we'll sing our goodbye song and Ms.Lara will give you a big smooch to end our week.
Okay?
So I have my rumpus stick here and I'm going to show you the activity that we'll do.
Ms.Maria, you come sit over here.
All right.
Our rumpus stick is just a long stick that I decorated with paper.
And of course I put a crown on just like our character Max.
Remember?
he was king of the wild things.
And do you remember how he conquered the wild things?
By making them do things.
Well, I am going to be king or queen of you wild things, and I'm going to make you do some verb action words.

I think it's Ms. Maria.
And I think she dropped off something.

I love it when Ms. Maria drops things off.
She dropped off a book.
It is called spaghetti in a hot dog bun.
Ooh.
What could it be about?
Do you think they're expecting us to eat spaghetti in a hotdog bun?
I've never tried that before.
Have you?
Let's see, the book has a picture of a little girl and she has wild hair and look, she is eating spaghetti in a hotdog bun.
Hmm.
What could this book be about?
And what does it have to do with wild things and Abiyoyo and bravery, which is what we've been talking about.
Shall we read it to find out?
All right, let's start.
Looking at the front cover, I notice that Maria Dismondy is the author.
Do you remember what the author does?
That's right.
They write the words in the story.
And the illustrator is Kim Shaw.
She drew the pictures.
So let's read our story together.
Oh, I'm nervous.
Spaghetti in a hot dog bun, never tried it.
The delicious smell of breakfast filled the air as Lucy's grandpa handed her a plate.
Lucy smeared ketchup on her toast.
Ketchup on toast?
Do you ever have ketchup on toast?
Oh, not me.
She turned to her grandpa and said 'Papa Gino, Harriet said she's never heard of ketchup on toast'.
Her family uses peanut butter and jelly.
Now that I've tried.
It's okay.
Not everyone likes the same thing, Lucy.
It doesn't mean one person is right or wrong.
We're all different.
And that's the truth.
What a boring world it would be if we were all exactly alike.
Do you agree?
Do you think it would be boring if we were all the same?
Do you remember what's really important?
Papa Gino asked.
Yes Papa, Even if we're different from others on the outside, we all have heart with feelings on the inside.
That's true.
And if you put your hand to your chest, you can even hear your heart beating deep inside of you.
That's my girl.
Remember when you treat others with love and kindness, you are doing the right thing, Papa Gino replied.
On the school bus, Lucy and her friend, Harriet pulled out some paper and crayons.
Sitting across from them was Ralph.
See here he is.
As usual, Ralph sat alone staring at the window.
He looked over at them and rolled his eyes.
Oh, that's what the wild things did with max.
Remember?
rolled their eyes.
That's not very kind In the classroom, Lucy sat down near the teacher.
Ralph carelessly hurried over and tripped on Lucy's foot.
Before long, he was glaring at her Ralph whispered 'woof'.
I can't see the book with this poodle in front of me.
Oh, Lucy could hear him giggling behind her.
Oh no.
Why did it have to be me?
She wondered.
So, Ralph is calling Lucy a poodle.
Oh, maybe it has something to do with her hair.
During lunch, Harriet shouted one of her favorite silly jokes over the children's voices.
As the girls ate, their bellies shook with laughter ha ha ha.
Across the table, Ralph hollered, 'Yuck.
That's a disgusting smell.
Whoever heard of eating spaghetti in a hot dog bun'.
Tony and the other children at the table turned away from Ralph shaking their heads.
Ralph continued poor little Lucy with her hair so poofy.
Oh, tears filled Lucy's eyes.
She began to cry.
Is Ralph being kind to Lucy?
Oh.
On the way home Lucy thought about what happened.
Maybe Ralph is mean to me because he thinks being different is bad.
I wish he would stop teasing me.
Slowly Lucy stepped off the bus.
How was your day?
Papa Gino asked.
Fine, she mumbled.
Papa reached over and pulled a crayon out of her hair.
How did this happen?
He asked.
Lucy didn't say a word.
That night as Papa Gino tucked Lucy into bed, He asked 'is everything all right in school'?
Lucy rolled over.
He sat down and whispered, 'Always remember if something's not right, we can work on fixing it together'.
It's not that easy, thought Lucy.
How do I stop Ralph from teasing me?
How can I be and have a heart?
And how can he be so mean?
Lucy had a hard time falling asleep, worrying about what would happen tomorrow.
The following day, Lucy was surprised to find Ralph leaving her alone until, Oh no, I'm even scared to read this part.
It's so mean.
Lucy took the bag Ralph handed her.
Inside were dog bones with a note that read Lucy, Lucy, stinky food that puts us in a big, bad mood.
Lucy, Lucy hair shaped like a cone, here's a treat for you.
A yummy dog bone.
How do you think Lucy is feeling right now?
Probably sad.
I'm feeling sad for Lucy too.
The beating of Lucy's heart was so loud.
She knew everyone around her can hear it.
Stop!
It hurts my feelings when you do this Ralph, Lucy said.
Please stop.
Do you think Ralph listened?
He turned and he walked away.
It was recess time and Lucy played alone.
She didn't want to tell her teacher about Ralph.
She was afraid of being a tattletale.
Lucy wished Papa Gina was there to help.
What should I do?
She asked herself over and over.
The bell rang and a recess ended.
Oh, then she heard something in the distance.
Are you ready?
That goes like this.
Help!
Help!
Tony yelled.
Ralph got himself stuck on top of the monkey bars.
It's the funniest thing ever.
This is my chance, said Lucy.
I'll go let Ralph know how mean he is, M-E-A-N mean.
So Lucy stomped off toward the monkey bars.
When she reached Ralph, Lucy paused.
She looked him in the eye and she said, 'What you did was so mean'.
Standing before Ralph, Lucy could hear her Papa's words.
Ralph did have a heart and he did have feelings too.
So I want you to think what should Lucy do?
Ralph was really mean to her.
And now Ralph is in trouble.
Should she just walk away?
Hmm.
Let's see what she's going to do.
And that moment Lucy decided what she would do.
She saw tears in Ralph's eyes.
He hesitated to move and whispered 'I'm scared'.
Lucy reached out and said, here, take my hand.
And she helped him down.
The two walked back to the classroom without saying a word.
As the bus pulled up to Lucy's stop, Ralph reached over and handed her a picture.
Lucy was amazed by what she saw.
Thanks, she muttered softly.
She had given, He had given her a picture of a dinosaur and here's this to Lucy.
After she got off the bus, Lucy smiled and said, Papa, there's a boy.
Ralph, who was really mean today to me.
Today he was in trouble and I helped him.
Papa Gino hugged Lucy and replied That took a lot of courage.
That's what we're learning about this week.
It wasn't the easiest thing to do.
You chose to treat others the way you would want to be treated.
I'm so proud of you, Lucy.
As they walked home, she asked him what was for dinner.
When Papa Gino said spaghetti, Lucy knew immediately what she would have for lunch the next day.
So what do you think?
Was Lucy brave in standing up to Ralph?
Hmm.
Now remember you can check out more books like this one on the Sora app in your local library.
Now I had a writing activity planned, but I want us to get to the taste testing and have enough time for that.
So I think we're going to switch over to our project.
What do you think we're going to be eating?
Yes, spaghetti in a hot dog bun.
So let me walk over to our project please.
So we can get that going.
All right.
Let's see.
All right Ms. Marie, I'm going to put you over here.
Now for the spaghetti in a hotdog bun, you're going to need a couple of ingredients.
The first ingredient you're going to need, of course is spaghetti.
Do you like to eat spaghetti?
I do.
I like to boil my spaghetti with a little salt and sometimes a little butter.
Yum.
You're going to need some spaghetti sauce.
Just pick your favorite.
You're going to need some hotdog buns.
We're not putting hotdogs in there.
Are we?
Nope.
Spaghetti goes in and if you want to make it extra delicious, you can actually put some butter or some cheese on top.
That's how I like to eat my spaghetti.
All right.
So we have a couple of taste testers that are going to come over and help me taste the spaghetti inside a hotdog bun.
Hey, taste tester.
Ooh.
We have our friends from Strathmore.
Do you guys want to say hi to all the boys and girls watching?
Okay.
Tell me with a thumbs up or a thumbs down if you're ready to try spaghetti in a hot dog bun.
Look how brave they are, such brave boys and girls.
They're going to try it all.
All right.
We're going to unveil our food.
Are you ready to give me a drum roll?
drum roll please.
First ingredient is spaghetti.
What do you think?
Looks pretty normal so far?
Would you eat it?
- [children] Yes - [Mrs. Lara] Oh, look, they're not scared at all.
They're going to eat it all.
Okay.
Second ingredient.
Drum roll please It's hotdog buns.
Still willing to try it?
(laughs) No.
Oh I'm given one thumbs up.
Okay.
Now I'm going to serve you the delicacy, muah chef's kiss.
That is spaghetti in a hotdog bun.
All right, here we go.
Oh, I'm actually going to try pouring it this way, spaghetti in a hot dog bun.
And you can actually, once you get it, just pass it on down.
Oh.
What I used to like when I was little is eat spaghetti and I used to pretend that it was worms.
Do you ever do that?
And did you know parents at home that if you put a little dye in your spaghetti, it actually comes out that color.
Look how excited they are to try it.
You can tell just by their faces.
What do you think?
All right.
That's two.
How many friends do I have?
Let's count.
Can you help me count?
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
6 friends.
So I have two.
How many more do I need?
Can someone do the math really quickly.
Four more.
All right.
He called it out.
Four more.
So now I have three.
How many more do I need?
- [Children] 1,2,3 Three more.
Best for last.
I won't leave anybody out.
All right, here we go.
And now I need, how many more?
Two more!
All right.
One two in Spanish is dos.
Oh, you're gonna take a big bite of this and you're going to love it.
And then you're going to go home and say, family can you please, please make me spaghetti in a hotdog bun.
Okay.
We're going to get ready to try it?
All right, here we go.
Everyone has their spaghetti in a hotdog bun.
First thing we're going to do.
Oh, you're ready to eat.
We're going to smell it so you can take your mask down because they feel comfortable doing that and you're gonna smell it.

- [Mrs. Lara] Oh, I love it.
Does anyone want more sauce?
- [Children] No - [Sebastian] I want some - [Mrs. Lara] Sebastian wants some, it's cold sauce.
I made it myself.
Don't worry.
I only put a little bit of ground spicy chili peppers in there.
What do you think?
That's not true.
I did it.
Okay.
Now tell me what does it look like?
Oh, we're ready to eat.
I'm keeping you in suspense.
What does it look like?
Does it look like a delicacy that you find at an expensive restaurant?
- [Children] No.
- [Mrs. Lara] No.
Why do you say that?
- [Boy] Because it's kind of weird.
- [Mrs. Lara] It's king of weird?
Oh, you think it's good?
All right.
Now, are we ready to try it out?
What do we think?
Okay.
You can put your mask down.

Give it a big chunk.
Here we go.
Thoughts, sums up.
Okay.
What does it taste like?
Tell me - [Boy] Like bread and spaghetti.
- [Mrs. Lara] Like bread and spaghetti.
Well that make sense because that's exactly what it is.
What do you think?
- [Girl] Hmm it's okay.
- [Mrs. Lara] It's okay?
What do you think would make it better?
- [Girl] Maybe.
Like a little bit of like more.
Maybe you can add Parmesan.
- [Mrs. Lara] Oh, I have some here, does anyone want a shake of Parmesan.
Would you like to, here I'll add it.
Ooh maybe try it now with the Parm.
Does anyone want Parmesan?
All right, there you go.
I'm going to come reach over.
A little bit, Okay.
It's not spaghetti without.
No thank you.
Okay.
What if I added peanut butter on top of there?
- [Children] No - [Mrs. Lara] No, whipped cream?
Cherries?
Grapes?
Goldfish?
- [Sebastian] Yes.
- [Mrs. Lara] Yes, Sour candies?
- [Children] No.
- [Mrs. Lara] You like sour candies?
Now.
I like to eat some unusual foods at home because part of my culture, I'm Mexican.
So I eat lots of different foods that you might find here around town.
So one food that I eat, that's unusual, is a sandwich cake.
Have you ever heard of that?
You have?
in Spanish it's pastel sandwich and it's literally bread and nacho cheese and ham.
Does that sound delicious?
Do any of you eat any unusual things that boys and girls might not eat normally?
You don't know.
Do you put?
Yes, what do you eat?
- [Boy] Cereal, milk and chocolate milk.
- [Mrs. Lara] Ooh.
He puts cereal and milk together, but instead of the milk it's chocolate milk.
No?
- [Boy] I get cereal with white milk.
And then I, and then I asked for a glass of milk.
You know, I could just drink it.
- [Mrs. Lara] Oh, so he had cereal in his mouth together.
And then on the side he drinks the glass of mouth.
That is pretty cool.
Pretty unusual.
You've thought of something.
All right.
- [Girl] Apples and peanut butter, - [Mrs Lara] Ooh, apples and peanut butter.
I've tried that too.
That's delicious.
And actually later on boys and girls, we're going to make a snack with apples probably next week.
All right.
Let's see.
How about you?
Did you think of something, Sebastian?
- [Sebastian] I've tried chicken nuggets with macaroni and cheese together.
- [Mrs. Lara] And thoughts.
It was good.
Now what made you try that unusual food?
chicken nuggets and Mac and cheese.
- [Sebastian] Because I like both of them and I wanted to see how they'll taste together.
