♪ (upbeat music) - Welcome back to Discovery Ranch.
I'm Mr. Dawson and this is my last time here at the ranch at PBS.
It's kind of a sad time because I've had so much fun and a lot of joy in bringing you all the things that I've brought you throughout the year.
And I'd love to be with you but at last it's time to move on to bigger and better things for you.
It's time.
It's time for moving on to first grade and showing those teachers all the things that you've learned here at Discovery Ranch.
And that's one thing that makes me happy.
All the things that you've learned this year.
How exciting that will be for you to use all that information.
Everything that you've learned this summer.
To read books and to write.
How exciting is that?
Yes, that makes me feel joyful inside for sure.
So it's a sad time but it's also a happy time and you should be happy because we all have to grow up.
We have to go on to new adventures and that's what's exciting.
Well, let's get busy.
Let's do some sight words right now.
Let's do our sight words.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
Too, this, if, my, from, in, help, have, and, is, that, and be.
Oh my goodness, remember that if you know all of these sight words, all 60 of them, oh my goodness how great will that be?
And when you see them in the books this summer you'll say, Oh, I know those words.
And when you write and you say, Oh, I need to know how to spell this.
What'd you go?
Oh, I know that.
I put it in my brain from Discovery Ranch.
Oh my goodness.
How great is that?
Yes.
So remember all these 60 words.
Do you promise you'll do that?
Okay.
Thank you so much.
All right now.
Oh, I was about to put my hand away, but no I need it because I want to talk about our essential question.
Our essential question is what places do you go to during the week?
There's a lot of places that we go to during the week in our neighborhood that's for sure.
And we have been talking about it all week.
And now I have a selection that I want to use to talk about it again.
So our selection today is called "A neighborhood."
And this is non-fiction.
Remember non-fiction means yes, it's true.
So when we look at this story today this one is going to be true.
Right.
Now, remember this is informational text because of not being a non-fiction but there's also a narrative.
A narrative is just a story for our enjoyment.
And usually is fiction, but this is non-fiction.
Now in this story, or in this selection, we have text clues.
And this time the text clue is right here.
It's called a map.
Can you say map?
A map is very important.
Maps help us to find out where places are.
We can look at a map and the map key to find where places are.
So on the map key, I have four places that talk about our map.
Park, school, fire station, and library.
And in this map key, they give us color clues.
The park is green.
The school is yellow.
The fire station is red and the library is orange.
Isn't that nice?
Yes.
So if we're going to use that always say it like this, okay let me see.
Here is the fire station.
Let's find it.
Here's the fire station.
If we look at the map, what place is to the right of the fire station?
Right.
It's the library.
Do you see how we can use a map for that?
That is awesome.
Okay.
Here's another one.
Are you ready?
Here's the school.
We're going to find the school.
Oh, here it is.
Okay.
So, what is to the left of the school?
Right.
It's the park.
Do you see how maps can be useful?
Maps are so useful.
So we can find places on maps that we want to go to.
Well, let's enjoy our selection.
Are you ready?
Let's visit the places on the map.
The map shows pictures of neighborhood places.
Yeah, sure it does.
A library has a lot of books.
We can borrow books to read.
Some libraries have a story time hour.
Did you know that?
Yes.
Maybe you could check out your library because they may have a story time.
Yes.
And that's where the librarian king will come and read a book.
Well, I have a question.
I have a question about these two pages.
Are you ready?
Here's my question.
What things can you do at the library?
What things can you do at the library?
That's right.
You can read books and there's lots of them.
Look at behind the librarian.
There's lots of books back there and she's reading a book as well.
But remember at the library, you must be very quiet because there's other people trying to read books too.
And usually people read quietly.
Let's turn the page.
The fire department helps keep the neighborhood safe.
You can go to a fire station and learn about safety rules.
Okay.
Here's my question here.
What's the job of the fire department?
It says it right in there.
What's their job?
Oh right here.
It says their job is to keep the neighborhood safe.
That's the job like they don't only put out fires.
If you get hurt the fire department will come and save they even save cats.
Isn't that wonderful?
Okay.
Let's keep reading.
Playgrounds have fun things to do.
There are many swings and slides.
It is a good place to play with friends.
Isn't that nice?
Ooh.
What are the things that you can do at the playground?
Oh, they have a little tire swing and oh here's a play structure back there.
That's pretty cool.
Let's keep reading.
There are different places in a school.
We learn in the classroom.
We read in the library.
We play in the schoolyard.
Nice.
That's cool.
Schools are really nice and it's been fun to be going back to school.
Have you been back to school and playing on the playground and going to the library maybe?
Or maybe the library in your classroom.
Oh going back to school has been fun.
I've been enjoying it.
That's for sure.
All right.
So that is our story.
Uh-oh, Cookie Monster, stay there.
All right.
Oh no, there goes Big Bird.
Oh no.
Well, we have to keep going.
So I'm going to take down the essential question because then we have to do our writing.
Our writing.
Let's take a look at our writing.
Are you ready?
Let me put it up here.
And then I'll go on this side and let's read it.
It says a neighborhood.
Find clues.
What is in the library?
Talk about it with a partner and you are my partner.
Let's circle the clues.
What do we find in the library?
Right.
Books.
Look at all these books.
Look at all these books.
Oh my goodness.
And even the librarian has a book.
Isn't that special?
It really is.
So that makes me think of what we should be writing.
What does a library have?
A library has books.
How many words are in that sentence?
Let's clap it.
You ready?
A library has books.
How many words?
Four.
Right.
So let's spell that sentence.
What was the first word?
A, do you know this?
Here you go.
The sight words.
A.
Do you know how to spell A?
A.
A spells A.
Good job.
Okay.
What's the next word?
A library.
How many syllables are in library?
Let's clap it.
Li-brar-y.
How many?
Three.
Li-brar-y.
So the first one is "Li".
L, is for L. I. Brar brar brar br ar Li-brar-y.
Oh, you think it's an E, huh?
But it's not.
A lot of times at the end of a word when you hear E it's going to be a Y.
Okay.
Our sentence is "A library has books."
and I have "A library has."
There you go again, another sight word.
Has.
H A S And what's the last word?
Books.
B B. Oh Oh, Oh, Oh Yeah O O says, Oh.
K and S. A library has books.
There we have it.
Right, right.
The punctuation.
Let's read our sentence one more time.
A library has books.
We've done it.
Well, I'd like to stop right there and tell you, Oh my goodness.
I've had so much fun here at Discovery Ranch showing you all the things that I know.
Oh, it's been great.
And now, you know what time it is?
It's time for us to have a little party.
Cause we're going to say bye.
So I brought out a little party toy.
(blows horn) We're done.
We're done.
(blows horn) You know a lot.
You can use a lot.
Use it all summer to read.
And then when you go to school to first grade show those teachers how smart you are.
And then where you learned them?
Right here at Discovery Ranch.
Oh my goodness.
We've had so much fun all year and I can't wait to see all the things you have learned and use them in your class and every day.
We'll see you later.
Bye bye.
