♪ (guitar music) (playful upbeat music) - [Mr.Dawson] Yes, yes, we have to do that.
That's right.
We have to do some, some reci...
I have to go.
I have to go.
We'll talk to you later.
Hi, good morning.
Mr. Dawson here.
Welcome back to Discovery Ranch.
You're here with me to learn how to read and write and we're gonna have so much fun this week.
Are you ready to learn?
I am ready to learn as well.
But remember, if you will write to me and tell me something you've learned this week, I'm going to send you an activity book.
And I know you want one so you should write me.
I looked in my mailbox today and I haven't found any letters in a while.
So I'm hoping somebody out there writes to me and tells me something they've been learning.
Well, let's get started.
What's the first thing we're gonna do?
Oh, oh, that's right!
Daily phonemic awareness!
Are you ready for it?
Today we're gonna play the game of segmenting.
We have talked about segmenting Professor Giesenbert taught us about segmenting and now it's time to practice to get really good at it.
Are you ready?
I'm gonna say a word and then we're gonna go slow motion slow and segment and get all the sounds.
Are you ready?
My first word is pick.
Can you say pick?
Okay, here we go.
Slow motion slow.
(in slow motion) Pick.
How many phonemes?
That's right.
Three!
One, two, three.
What was the first phoneme?
(popping sound) Right!
What was the middle phoneme?
Ih And what was the ending phoneme?
Kuh!
Good job!
Puh, Ih, Kuh Let's do another one.
You ready?
Here's the word, goat.
Can you say goat?
Okay, here we go.
We're gonna do goat.
Put your hand up.
Here we go.
Slow motion slow, you ready?
(slow motion) Goat.
We did it.
How many phonemes?
Three phonemes!
What was the beginning phoneme?
Guh.
What was the middle phoneme?
Right, O!
And what was the ending phoneme?
Tss!
That's right.
Guh, O, Tss and when I put it together it says goat.
Right!
Last one, are you ready?
Here's the last one, this is a tricky one.
Are you ready?
It's ship.
Can you say ship?
Okay, here we go.
Slow motion Slow motion slow, here we go.
(slow motion) Ship How many phonemes?
Three, right!
Three, what was the beginning phoneme?
Shh What was the middle phoneme?
Ihh And what was the ending phoneme?
Puh There you go.
Shh, Ihh, Puh Ship Good job.
Wow, now, if you practice that, pretty soon, when it comes to writing, you'll be able to connect the sounds to the letters and you'll be able to write them.
But more about that later, it's kind of like a little surprise I have for you.
Well, what should we do now?
Oh, right.
We always do our sight words.
Hey, look at our sight words.
I don't just have 10.
Oh my goodness.
How many do I have?
I have a lot.
In fact, these are all the sight words we have been learning all year.
Now, I have some new ones maybe next week, but I thought we should review the ones that we had all week.
So I want to look at all of these this week and review all of them.
Are you ready?
Oh my goodness.
Here we go.
Let's go right down to the blue ones.
T-H-E spells the.
A spells a. T-O spells to.
L-I-K-E spells like.
I spells I. S-E-E spells see.
C-A-N spells can.
I-F spells if.
A-N-D spells and.
W-E spells we.
Good job!
Now, remember with all these sight words if I can put them in my brain, then when I see them in words, I'll be able to read them.
And then if I'm going to do some writing, guess what?
I'll say, "Oh, I have these in my brain.
I remember, I can write them."
That's why I've been practicing all of these words all every day, all year.
Why?
It gives you the opportunity to put these words in your brain, right?
So that you can read them and write them.
And what's cool is all of these words are very, very common in a lot of books.
If you look in a lot of books, you'll probably see for sure one of these words in every book, I guarantee it.
That's why it's so important to know all of these sight words.
Isn't that awesome?
Yes!
Okay, what do we do next?
Oh, I know.
We're gonna do Phonics.
Remember, we have been talking about vowels and digraphs.
Vowels and Diagraph.
Remember vowels are important, because they make in Kindergarten, they make two sounds.
They can say their phoneme, which they're happy.
That makes them the happiest, when they're saying they're phoneme.
But each vowel will also say their name, when there's a clue for them to do it.
So, we know that a then can say "ah" or it can say A. E can say "eh" or it can say E. I can say "ih" or it can say I. O can say "Oh" or it can say O.
And U can say "Uh" and they can say U.
And sometimes it says "Ooh" like in Luke.
That's all the vowels and their sounds in Kindergarten.
You guys are doing excellent.
Let's talk about digraphs.
Remember C-H says "ch" T-H says "th" S-H says "sh" and W-H says "wa" w eight says what?
Sorry.
Made a little mistake but we've talked about how it's okay.
To make a mistake.
Okay.
Remember, digraphs are special because it's two letters that make one phoneme.
Ahh so cool.
Now, are you ready to, to study about another vowel team?
Here we go.
Last time.
Last week we stayed about, O-O says, uh, but look at this.
This is cool.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
I have what?
O-O again?
Whoa.
But this time.
O-O says the sound that you hear in the middle of spoon "sp-oo-n" Ooh, did you know that?
O-O could say Ugh.
And it also gets a, Ooh.
Oh my goodness.
Oh my goodness.
Yes.
And here are some clues that tell you that it says Ooh.
O-O says, Ooh.
And look U blank E can say, Ooh, like in Luke U by itself can say, Ooh and blank E-W can say, Ooh.
And U-E and say, Ooh.
And O-U can say, oh it can say Ooh.
And it can also say ow, do you remember that?
We've talked about that and blank U-I blank also says, Ooh, all of these are clues that Tell me to say, Ooh, isn't that amazing?
Yeah.
So this week we're going to study about the phoneme Ooh, Ooh.
Oh my goodness.
All right.
Now I saved the best for last.
I want to talk to you about all the learning that we've done all year.
You guys have been amazing.
You've learned how to blend phonemes and segment phonemes.
Oh my goodness.
You've been learning how to spell the phonemes and put letters with them.
So, so you can make a word.
And then I put a word where we sounded it out and blended it to make a word.
Why have I been doing that?
I've been teaching you different vowel teams and and different digraphs and, and vowels themselves.
Why have I been doing that?
Oh my goodness.
It's for this reason right here we are going to begin to do something new.
Are you ready?
Are you ready for the surprise or maybe I should wait.
Maybe I should wait for tomorrow.
No.
Do you want to know here it is.
We are going to talk more about writing.
We're going to talk more about writing.
It's time for us to write, write more.
In fact, I'm going to give you a challenge a weekly challenge on Fridays to write to me.
But before we do we have to talk a little bit more about writing.
And this is what I want talk about today.
What are the stages of writing?
A lot of times we can just write, but in kindergarten we want to have a strategy.
We want to have a strategy for writing.
So our first strategy is plan plan.
And do you see that that's a light bulb.
When I see a light bulb, it reminds me, Oh I have to have an idea.
So when we are planning to write it's because we have an idea of something we want to talk about.
Hmm.
I know, I know I might talk about recycling or protecting our environment because I'm trying to save things around the ranch.
Well, after you plan the next thing we do is we do a rough draft and a rough draft to me is when we write and we revise which means we rewrite and put more details in there or, or correct something.
Yes.
And then after we do that, then we edit, we've talked about editing already.
Editing is making sure that we have spaces uppercase letters, periods, and that our sentences make sense.
And then after we plan and after we do a rough draft and after we edit and make sure everything is right guess what we do, we do the final writing.
That's where we rewrite everything.
Because now everything is right.
We have all the right spellings, all the spaces, the the upper cases, the periods, all that, all those things.
And then we can say, Oh yes.
Now I want somebody to read my final writing.
So when we want to write the stages of writing or planning rough draft, edit, and then final draft, we're going to spend more time in this Oh it's so going to be good.
I want you to be here every day, this week because we are going to explore writing even deeper all.
and I think, I think professors coming tomorrow, Oh it's going to be exciting.
Be ready, get that pencil, get that paper and be ready to do some writing.
I'm so glad that you came here today.
We've talked about so many things and it's already time to go.
Can you believe it come tomorrow?
So you can discover more about reading bye (Guitar) - Good morning, to a brand new day time to learn and games to play.
