♪ (guitar music) (bright upbeat music) - I think Mrs. Vang would like this one.
And maybe Mr. Dawson would like this.
Oh, this one's for Mrs. Knicks.
Oh, Oh, hi, I was checking out the stickers from my activity book.
Would you like an activity book?
Did you know they come with stickers?
Don't you love the stickers?
I love stickers.
They are amazingly fun.
I would love to send you a book with stickers.
All you have to do is write to me right here in our PBS classroom.
Oh, that's right, I'm Mrs. Hammack, welcome to our PBS classroom.
I am glad you're here today, it's Friday.
Don't you love Fridays?
I do.
And we're gonna finish up that story about the shrimp.
I can't wait to find out what the King does.
But before we get to that I would love to send you a book with stickers.
Will you please write to me right here at the station?
Send it to the address on your screen and give me your address, I'll be sure to put one of these fun things in the mail to you completely free.
I know you'll love it.
I'm gonna set this here, and I'm gonna remind you that to be an excellent reader you have to practice, and there's a great way to practice, several ways.
You can check out books from your school library, you can check out books from the County public library where you live all for free.
Or if you're in Fresno unified or another school district that uses the Sora app, then you can check out digital books right on your tablet or your phone or your computer.
It is awesome because then you have a book with you wherever you go.
Isn't that cool?
So check it out, find a good book that you enjoy reading.
Maybe find a book that you can share with someone in your family and you can take turns reading to each other.
That's the best way to get to be a great reader.
Let's see who's number one on our Sora countdown.
Are you ready?
Here we go.
Heaton Bulldogs, way to go Heaton.
Wow, I am impressed.
Heaton had the most Sora checkouts in all of our Fresno unified family.
Great job Heaton.
We're very proud of you.
Clap, clap, clap, clap.
Good job.
Let's get to our learning for today, shall we?
Let's train our ears for sound?
You ready to do that?
We're gonna play the blending game because that is one of the most important skills that we practice in first grade.
It helps us when we're trying to sound out words.
So here we go.
I'm gonna give you the sounds, you're going to put them together and tell me my word.
Ready?
Throat, throat, throat, throat, good job.
How about this one?
Splash, splash, Splash, splash.
Great job.
Our last one for today.
Scrub, scrub, scrub, scrub, terrific.
Are you getting it?
Good job.
Let's take a look at our fluency sounds.
Ue says ue.
Oy says oy.
Ow says ow.
Oi says oi.
Au says au.
Ew says ew, and augh says augh.
Good job.
All this week, we've been learning three letter blends and they come at the beginning of words.
It's when we take three consonants to make a blend.
Let's say the pattern and then the sound.
You ready?
Scr says scr, shr says shr, spl says spl, squ says squ, str says str, spr says spr, and thr says thr.
We have scream, shrug, sprinkles, street, square and three.
Good reading.
I can't wait anymore.
Let's find out what's happening in our story of the Three Shrimp I've been waiting.
So yesterday the King ordered striped fish but the cook didn't have any.
He only had three shrimps.
So he split them in half, put them on a plate and put sauce.
Let's see what happens in our story.
Let me get my handy-dandy marker, and my reading finger.
Let's find out what's going on today.
Ready?
The meal was set before the King.
The King took a bite.
He threw down his fork and gave his plate a push.
"This fish tastes strange," said the King.
"It is not my order."
The cook stood in front of the King.
"Sir, I had no striped fish."
The King gnawed on a bit more shrimp.
Then the King shrugged.
The King smiled, "I think I like your shrimp better" "than the striped fish."
"Tomorrow I will eat shrimp again."
Each night, the King had three shrimp with sauce on top.
Wow, it turned out great.
Do you think, how do you think the cook was feeling when he stood in front of the King, when the King wanted to know why he didn't have fish?
What do you think he was feeling?
Oh, I know.
I think he was feeling nervous.
I would be really nervous cause he's thinking the King is gonna be really upset, but it turned out really well, didn't it?
That's so exciting.
I'm glad when, I love a happy ending, don't you?
Let's see if we can find some of those three-letter blends in our story.
Right away, when I read it, I thought, oh, look at this word threw, he threw down his fork and he said his fish tasted strange.
It didn't taste strange because it wasn't fish, was it?
What else did you see?
Oh, yup, striped fish.
Good job.
And shrimp again.
And the King shrugged and there's shrimp again and striped again and shrimp again, oh, and shrimp one more time.
Wow, a lot of the word shrimp.
Did you see any of our high-frequency words?
Let's, oh, look, there's push.
What else did you see?
Before, can you find it?
where?
Oh, there it is right there.
I heard you.
How about front?
Do you see?
Oh, there it is, front.
Good reading.
And your, do you remember your, where is it?
Oh, look, there it is.
Wow, do you see how all of those things we've been practicing come together?
What's that?
Oh, you're right.
Tomorrow is also in our story.
I love your good listening and good-looking eyes.
Great job.
Let's take a look at our inflectional endings.
We kind of ran out of room yesterday or ran out of time and I want to make sure we have plenty of time to practice some of these inflectional endings and how they might look on a practice page.
So all of the directions, remember sometimes we have to change the words to add ed or ing.
So let's take a look at this one.
Who is, at the door now?
Here's our clue.
The word now means it's happening right now.
So that means we're gonna use ing.
This word is what?
Knock, good.
K, n, o, c, k says, knock.
Who is knocking, who is knocking at the door now?
Good job.
Let's look at this one.
My cat, the word is scratch, me yesterday.
Do you see the clue?
Yup, that's right.
Yesterday means it already happened.
My cat, so we're gonna add ed because scratched, my cat scratched me yesterday.
Good job.
Let's try the next one.
The bus, here last week.
What clue did you get?
Right, last week means it already happened.
Our word is stop, so we're gonna add the ed cause it already happened, but watch what happens, it's the one, one, one rule.
We have stop, it's one syllable.
We have o, it's a one vowel sound, and it's followed by one consonant.
So we have to double the consonant and add ed, stopped.
How did you do?
Great job.
Let's try one more and then we have some high-frequency words to really quickly go through.
Mom is, our word is write.
Mom is, a letter.
Writted or writing?
Yeah, writted isn't a word, is it?
So let's look at the word write, w, r, i, t, e, now are we gonna add the e?
No, we have to get rid of the e and add ing.
Mom is writing a letter.
Great job.
It's tricky, but you're getting the hang of it.
The key is to go slowly and think about all those different rules that we talked about when you're adding ed or ing.
You'll get it, I know you will.
We have two more words that we didn't get to do yesterday.
Your and tomorrow yours spelled y, o, u, r, tomorrow is spelled t, o m, o, r, r, o, w. Let's see what sentence they belong in.
Is house on the moon?
So your is a belonging word, isn't it?
So is your house on the moon?
That's silly.
How about this one?
They will fly in an airplane.
Oh, good, tomorrow.
They will fly in an airplane tomorrow.
Great job.
You have practiced and learned hard things this week.
I'm very proud of you.
You are amazing.
Remember, don't give up because you can do hard things.
I hope you come back next week.
